It’s 3 p.m. and My Morning Tea Is Still Hot Because of This “Smart” Mug

When it comes to the temperature of my drinks, I have a strong preference, and that preference is “hot.” I hate lukewarm drinks as much as that Dr. Seuss character hates green eggs and ham: I will not drink them, Sam I Am. On the other hand, I will drink anything hot: wine, water, cold brew (yes, you can do that). I’ve scalded my mouth so many times, I’m not sure I still have taste buds. And when I get halfway through my mug of hot whatever and it’s already room temp, I’m either pouring it right down the drain or hanging out by the microwave, constantly reheating my sad, partially drank drink.

The Ember Ceramic Mug was made for overzealous people like me. Conceived of by entrepreneur and dishware disrupter Clay Alexander, it lets you regulate the temperature of your drink with a Bluetooth connection and an app on your phone. Welcome to the future, mugs!

Yes, these here are $80 cups. But I’m thinking of all the hot liquids that will no longer go to waste! The mug sits on a saucer that doubles as a charger so it stays hot indefinitely, or you can walk around with it—to meetings, to the bathroom, to show off your steaming-hot beverage—for up to an hour before it’ll need to charge. The white mug I have washes easily and has stood up to turmeric, chaga mushroom powder (lol), and hibiscus-based drinks. It also comes in black ceramic and classy copper—just don’t put any of them in the dishwasher.

I’ve been using my Ember since August—yes, I enjoy extremely hot beverages year-round—and it’s turned me into a more dedicated tea drinker and a very hydrated person. If I have any complaint, it’s that, at 10 ounces, it holds less hot liquid than I’d like to drink. Ember does have a 12 ounce travel mug, but it’s nearly twice the price, and I’ve learned the hard way that I should not drink hot beverages on the subway.

Lastly, I will admit that the highest temperature setting possible is 145 degrees Fahrenheit (the lowest is 120), and though that’s safer for my mouth, it’s just not quite as hot as I like my liquids. But, you know, that’s probably for the best, since having taste buds is important for both my pleasure and my job.
