The intricate graphics were made by 10 international female artists and design studios.
Google is celebrating International Women’s Day the best way they know how to — with an interactive Doodle depicting inspirational quotes by trailblazing women from all over the world. What makes it even better? The intricate designs are “told by and made by women.”
There are 13 inspiring quotes from both past and present female leaders, including multimedia artist and musician Yoko Ono, Mexican painter Frida Kahlo, American astronaut Mae Jemison, Indian Olympian boxer May Kom and many more.
In a statement, Google says it was no easy task to choose which quotes to use. “The process of choosing the thirteen quotes was extremely difficult, but we aimed to include a diverse representation of voices on a day which celebrates the past, present, and future community of diverse women around the world,” the statement reads.
They also have a Q&A with the 10 artists they commissioned to design the colorful images. One of them, Tokyo-based Hazuki Tamano, created the artwork for Ono’s quote. It reads: “A dream you dream alone is only a dream. A dream you dream together is reality.”
Tamano said she used the sky as her inspiration for Ono’s quote, written in Japanese and translated below the white, blue and red characters. “I used the sky as inspiration for this piece, as Yoko Ono references it in many of her works,” she told Google. “Red is used to accent “dream” and “reality” to represent the sun shining brightly down on us.”
